From expertise to entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship often starts with expertise, but it thrives on vision. Jason Bergin and Hans ter Maat exemplify this principle through their work with Walnut Engineering, 3PointPM, and their joint venture HUB-Z. Having started their individual companies in 2020 and 2021, they strategically combined their strengths in 2023 to create HUB-Z, with a clear focus on supporting organisations in the Northern region of the Netherlands.

Walnut Engineering, founded by Jason, focuses on project management and project engineering. Hans, through 3PointPM, delivers project management and process engineering. Together, they offer a structured, results-driven approach that helps organisations maintain control over complex technical and operational projects. Their work is characterised by clarity, efficiency and a strong emphasis on long-term value creation.

Entrepreneurship with focus on core strengths
‘Focus on what you are good at and what you enjoy doing, and outsource the rest,’ is one of the key lessons that shaped their entrepreneurial mindset. By delegating administration and tax-related tasks, they created space to concentrate on strategy, client relationships and project performance. Equally important is their belief in strong professional networks. ‘Networking is not optional, it is a critical business asset,’ they emphasise.

Their track record speaks for itself. Full schedules and a steady flow of assignments reflect strong market trust and growing brand authority. At the same time, expansion within the Groningen region remains a strategic challenge. ‘There is a lot of potential in the North, but growth requires visibility, consistency and the right partnerships,’ they explain.

A work environment that supports collaboration
Their choice of office space underlines their practical, people-oriented mindset. Moving away from Zernike was a conscious decision. The current location offers a more diverse mix of companies, a more open atmosphere and a layout that fits their operational needs. ‘It’s not about luxury, it’s about functionality, energy and being in the right environment,’ they state. The building itself, with its variety of businesses and open character, fosters collaboration and fresh perspectives.

Accessibility is a core element of their approach. Entrepreneurs are welcome to drop by for a coffee, whether to discuss complex work-related challenges or simply to exchange ideas. ‘Our door is always open – sometimes the best solutions start with an informal conversation,’ they share.

Looking ahead: sustainable growth and lasting impact
Looking ahead, their focus remains on sustainable growth, strengthening their regional footprint and continuing to deliver high-impact project and process solutions. Their journey reflects a balance between technical expertise, strategic vision and a genuine commitment to collaboration.
